A group of Crusader tracksters strengthened their resolve and put forward one of the most inspiring meets of the season.
In my favorite Rocky sequel, Rocky Balboa, there is a quote that encapsulates this 2025 St. Mary’s T&F season: "It ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!" Over this past season, Crusader T&F coaches and athletes were dealt hit after hit: the loss of potential state medalists to transfer, trip to Argentina, injury, and illness. Some would take those hits and be defeated, but in sport it is often best to follow the words of Rocky Balboa and “keep moving forward”.
At this week’s SD-2 Special District T&F championship meet at Brookings, a group of Crusader tracksters strengthened their resolve and put forward one of the most inspiring meets of the season. Their fourth (girls) and fifth (boys) place team finishes were not where they had hoped to finish after looking forward from last year’s district meet, but the 28 athletes certainly mustered quite an impressive list of performances. 16 PRs; 24 podium placements (top 8): 8 state meet qualifiers; and 2 district champions.
The boys will send 3 state meet qualifiers: Aiden Miller (110 H); Eli Angulo (TJ); and Aiden DeBoer (HJ), and he girls will send 5 state meet qualifiers: Adley Damon (1500m & 3000m); Bella Fortino (3000m); Meno Kuba, Liz McGill, Grace Weymouth, Alia Newman (4x400 relay); and Liz McGill (HJ) to next OSAA 3A State Championship meet at Hayward Field in Eugene.
